Tesla Catalog
PROJECT TYPE: Catalog - 16 pages
DELIVERABLES: Print Publication

OVERVIEW:
For this project, we had a create a catalog for a chosen brand that would represent and showcase their products. It was my challenge to gather all the images, graphics and written content that would be used in the making of the catalog. I had guidelines that also needed to be included in the catalog, such as, a lifestyle spread, a grid of products, and at least 15 of the items sold by your chosen company.
SOLUTION:
My goal was to have my catalog feel like it came straight from Tesla themselves. Of course, I wanted to showcase the incredible lineup of cars that they offer, but I also wanted to showcase their charging options, accessories, and merchandise. I wanted to create an elevated feel when viewing the catalog that would send viewers and readers to their website for further information.
PROCESS

MOOD BOARD:
Tesla has a very identifiable color palette, so I decided to keep the familiar colors present throughout the catalog. They also use very bold, dynamic, and high-quality photography in all their images, and I wanted to showcase that. You can also see the references that I gathered to make the grid spread an interesting layout.
TYPE EXPERIMENTS:
As I started experimenting with type, I started to find that a lot of the clean and basic San serifs worked well for my heading and body copy. However, they felt a little to safe and I wanted to find something different. For the body copy I went with Proxima Nova-Regular. The heading is Carbon-Bold. This gave the catalog a more tech look and feel which paired well with the Tesla brand.
IDEATION

GRID SPREAD SKETCHES:
I knew that the grid spread was going to be challenging because of the amount of content that needed to fit on the spread. You can see some of my early sketches as I tried to find the best way to showcase multiple products without crowding the page.

LIFE STYLE SPREAD SKETCHES:
I immediately had a vision for the lifestyle spread. I wanted the graphic or image to take up much of the page and I found the perfect image that would work for that. It perfectly captured the Tesla lifestyle that the consumer could achieve by utilizing multiple products from the brand.
ROUGH COVER SKETCHES:
Going into the sketches, I wanted to have an eye-catching and interesting cover that would instantly grab your attention. Another element that I wanted was a clever title or byline that could be paired with the Tesla logo. “Leading the charge” was the winner as it referenced Tesla’s dominance in the electric vehicle realm, as well as a nod to the charging aspect the cars refuel with.
REFINED COVER SKETCHES:
I narrowed down the rough sketches to my top three and then refined them even further. Of the three, the first on left checked all the boxes for me. It was interesting, highlighted the Tesla vehicle, and felt like the car was popping off the page. For these reasons, I knew that this would work as the perfect cover.
FINAL SOLUTION

MOCKUPS:
After receiving feedback along the way from my peers and professionals, revisions were constantly being made to better adjust the final product catalog.
REFLECTION:
Overall, I’m very proud of how this catalog turned out. There were many goals that I set for myself and managed to accomplish all of them. I feel that I elevated the already innovative Tesla company while staying on brand and recognizable. This project was challenging because of the total control I had when creating the visual style that I had in mind, but I learned how to navigate these longer projects to better prepare myself for the future.
