PT - Faz um tempo que eu quero ilustrar coisas que eu gosto. Vou começar pelo Pinball Wizard, personagem intepretado pelo Elton John, no filme Tommy de 1976, derivado do álbum de mesmo nome da banda The Who. Se não fosse por esse álbum, acho que não estaria aqui agora escrevendo/ilustrando isso. Qual a relação desse álbum/filme com o meu trabalho de ilustrador? Senta que lá vem a história kkk.
Tudo começou quando consegui meu primeiro emprego em uma loja de discos, vendendo vinis, CDs e livros usados. Na época, eu estava estudando Publicidade e Propaganda e achava que minha carreira seria como diretor de arte. Entre os clientes, conheci dois sócios de uma agência. Um dia mencionei que estava estudando PP e eles me disseram que eu poderia fazer um estágio lá. Não me sentia preparado para começar, mas vocês sabem como é, nunca estamos realmente prontos.
Um deles encomendou o álbum em vinil do Tommy. Enquanto eu catalogava alguns discos, tropecei na edição especial do álbum com a London Symphony Orchestra e fiquei imediatamente fascinado. A arte da capa do álbum, com uma esfera cromada, era fascinante. Mas o que realmente chamou minha atenção foi o encarte inspirado em máquinas de Pinball.
Lembro de ter pensado: "Nossa, esse disco é demais! Eu preciso dele!".
Decidi ligar e avisar que o disco havia chegado. Ele atendeu o telefone e minha única reação foi dizer: "cara, ainda tem aquele estágio disponível?"
Nessa época, além de iniciar minha carreira, comecei minha coleção de discos de vinil. É incrível como um encontro casual com um álbum pode mudar o rumo da sua vida. A partir daí, fui diretor de arte, designer gráfico, analista de marketing e, finalmente, ilustrador. Mas tudo começou com aquele álbum que mexeu com minha imaginação e me levou a uma jornada incrível até aqui (nem foi tão incrível, mas queria fazer esse trocadilho com a música Amazing Journey, faixa 4 desse disco),
Olhando para trás, percebo que não é apenas a música que é poderosa, mas também as histórias por trás dela. O álbum Tommy do The Who sempre terá um lugar especial em meu coração, não apenas porque é incrível, mas porque tem sido trilha sonora da minha vida até aqui

EN - It's been a while since I've wanted to illustrate things I like. I'll start with Pinball Wizard, a character played by Elton John in the 1976 movie Tommy, based on the album of the same name by the band The Who. If it weren't for this album, I don't think I'd be here now writing/illustrating this. What's the connection between this album/movie and my work as an illustrator? Sit down, here comes the story haha.
It all started when I got my first job at a record store, selling vinyl, CDs, and used books. At the time, I was studying Advertising and thought my career would be as an art director. Among the customers, I met two partners from an agency. One day I mentioned that I was studying Advertising and they told me I could do an internship there. I didn't feel prepared to start, but you know how it is, we're never really ready.
One of them ordered the vinyl album of Tommy. While I was cataloging some records, I stumbled upon the special edition of the album with the London Symphony Orchestra and was immediately fascinated. The album cover art, with a chrome sphere, was fascinating. But what really caught my attention was the pinball machine-inspired booklet.
I remember thinking, "Wow, this album is amazing! I need it!".
I decided to call and let him know the album had arrived. He answered the phone and my only reaction was to say, "Dude, is that internship still available?"
At this time, besides starting my career, I began my vinyl record collection. It's amazing how a chance encounter with an album can change the course of your life. From there, I was an art director, graphic designer, marketing analyst, and finally, an illustrator. But it all started with that album that stirred my imagination and led me on an amazing journey to where I am today (it wasn't that amazing, but making a direct reference to the song Amazing Journey, track 4 of that album).
Looking back, I realize that it's not just the music that is powerful, but also the stories behind it. The Who's album Tommy will always have a special place in my heart, not just because it's amazing, but because it has been the soundtrack of my life so far.
