Integrated Design Project - Bridge to the Future.
For this project I had to design student accomodation, aiming at post and undergraduates. I wanted to keep the two seperate as undergraduates tend to create a lot of noise, and postgraduates have heavy work loads. I used the bridge that cuts through the site as a way of seperating them keeping undergraduates to the left, and postgraduates to the right.
My main concept for this project was to create a social space for students, that would also have a communal feel. Even though I decided to seperate the living accommodations for post and undergraduates, I wanted to create a space that would give them the oppertunity to meet and socialise together. I have used the space under the bridge to include a study hub for all students. This allows students to get out of their rooms and study together with friends in a welcoming atmosphere.
Floor Plans // Sections // Elevations
I focused on the design of the undergraduate accomodation, and from developments I got the shape that fits well into the sites awkward shape. It is split into two blocks which would be connected with bridges. The ground floor plan includes five studio appartments, an office and washing facilities in the first block. The second block is the same on all floors, a flat of five with a shared kitchen and lounge.

Interior Room Axonometric
Student bedrooms are typically only designed around the use of one person, meaning that when you have guests over it doesnt comfortably sit a lot of people. So I included window boxes which give extra seating within the bedroom, and at the same time give another dimension so the elevation of my design. These window boxes are made from colour concrete, which add a little bit of life to the interior spaces and make the bedroom less dull.
Building Visuals
Landscape Visuals
I have incorporated the bridge into my masterplan, using the columns as additional seating, and including another coloumn seat within my undergraduate accommodation design.
I wanted to include a lot of green open spaces due to a lack of landscaping around the site. From this I came up with the orrientation of buildings on the site, keeping the south clear creating open spaces filled natural sunlight. This helps bring a more natural feel to a site that is surrounded by large buildings.
