Advice... by Mary Schmich

'Advice, like youth probably just wasted on the young' is an article by Mary Schmich, published in 1997. It was made famous by the song 'Everybody's Free to Wear Sunscreen' by Baz Luhrmann. The article explains the advice she would give if she was giving a graduation speech. It is humourous and does not take itself too seriously.

I identified two layers in the text. Firstly the advice, which are instructions or rules for life. Secondly the funny, chatty sections which undermine the advice given. I made the first layer a large, navy, serif font to give it an air of authority and show that it is more important than the second layer. I made the second part a small, sans serif font and used pink paper. This makes the second layer look less serious and more friendly and chatty. When you open a page in the book, you first see the advice and a pink piece of paper. You can not see the funny, chatty bits until you turn the small, pink page over. This creates surprise for the reader.
