A Madwoman's Diary is a novel by Géza Csáth, a famous Hungarian psychiatrist and novelist from the beginning of the 20th century. The contents of the book are composed of snippets from diary entries of an actual patient of his in a mental institution, Miss G., mixed together with his own observations of her. As I was trying to visually capture the overall atmosphere of this haunting work, I had a single goal in mind: to do justice to the desperation, fear, and pain that this woman had to endure.
Miss G. believes that she is hunted by the Devil himself and, having already possessed her body, tries to smother her life force from the inside. In the meantime, she receives no help from the outside, her feelings are continously discredited by the doctors, claimed to be untrue, even pathological. As a last resort, she desperately writes on whatever scraps of paper she can find; it is the only way her truth can gain some semblance of being real. This sense of utter loneliness defines the entire novel. My final depiction of this forlorn ambience was inspired by the following harrowing lines:
