Alien Landscapes XX

There are places in this universe that are very different from the planet you and I inhabit. Take, for example, the planet Petrow in NGC 5194 (the Whirlpool Galaxy). Petrow is a rather idyllic planet. Edible plants are so naturally abundant, that agriculture never developed there—gathering enough fruits, leaves, and roots for one's daily caloric needs is less difficult than farming. Likewise, gathering enough fruits, leaves, and roots for one's daily caloric needs is less difficult than capturing animal prey, so omnivory and carnivory (including their subtypes) never evolved on Petrow. And that means that the animals of Petro never evolved strategies to avoid being eaten.

There is one species on Petrow that has achieved civilization. These creatures resemble bipedal rabbits. This has caused them some trouble off-planet, since most starfaring species are omnivorous or carnivorous and most planets have edible herbivores that more or less look like rabbits. And the creatures of Petrow don't even have defense mechanisms against being attacked by hungry things with sharp teeth. More than one first contact has ended badly for the Petrovian(s) involved.
