'What a Carve Up' Book Cover

Penguin Book Award 2014.

The annual competition by Penguin calls for design students to create and submit book covers for a variety of best-selling novels.

In 2014, the brief was based around "What a Carve Up!" by Jonathan Coe. The cover required an imaginative, original interpretation of the novel whilst appealing to the average marketplace. It also required versatility, being able to sit on the shelves of a supermarket or ebook store as easily as a traditional bookshop.

I focused the project around typography as the story is based on a writer unravelling a family mystery. The novel takes a lot of twists and turns which I showed through the use of extended lines - guiding potential buyers to the back cover synopsis. For this reason, I felt the book would sell effectively in a store, whilst maintaining a strong enough front-cover to appeal through an e-book format.

Programmes used to complete included Adobe Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator.
