Before the sugar coated versions of the brothers Grimm, the fairy tales we know were much more dark, and warned about the dangers of the world. Told mostly in taverns, around medieval Europe, this tale is open to many interpretations. It could be a literal warning and moral tale, or as a symbolic journey from innocence to maturity and the inevitable development of female sexuality.
