Porsche 917 at Le Mans

Porsche dominance at Le Mans 1970-71
1970 Porsche 917K #23
Porsche Kontruktionen - Salzburg
This red and white 917K delivered Porsche’s first overall victory in the grueling 24 hours of Le Mans.

The semi-factory Salzburg team ran the #23 car with a weaker 4.5 litre engine, compared to other 917’s 4.9 litres, but in the rainy conditions the veteran driver duo of Hans Hermann and Richard Attwood proved that you need more than just speed to win the race.
1970 Porsche 917L #3
Martini International Racing Team
Nicknamed 'Hippie' or 'Psychedelic' after its striking purple and green livery, this long-tail 917 was driven to 2nd place by Gerard Larousse and Willi Kauhsen.
1971 Porsche 917K #19
JW Automotive Engineering
The famous Gulf livery as it raced in the 1971 24 Hours of Le Mans. The blue/orange car driven by Richard Attwood and Herbert Müller finished second overall behind the #22 Martini 917.
1971 Porsche 917K #22
Martini International Racing Team
With an average speed of 222.3 kph and a total distance of 5335.3 kms drivers Gijs van Lennep and Helmut Marko set records that would stand for 39 years. The 3rd place Ferrari was 30 laps down, it was such a display of force that rule changes for next year essentially banned the 917.
