The 65m Nouveau concept by Robert Star is the result of a collaborative effort with Feadship and Delft University of Technology. The recent industrial design graduate explains the thinking behind the project which breaks away from the current trend for floor-to-ceiling windows in favour of privacy.

In the development of Nouveau, I wanted to create a yacht with an expressive exterior that would meet the growing demand by the market for something new.

Nouveau has been designed to carry a significant amount of equipment for the exploration of remote locations. Much consideration has to be given to the general arrangement when creating a world cruiser, which impacts on the design and character of the vessel. For this project, it led to a closed
and rather defensive-looking exterior with a strong military influence. It was important during the design process to create a balance between luxury and the operative qualities found on navy ships, as these vessels have a very masculine and explorative aesthetic.

The design features tall, closed bulwarks and excludes any railings. Instead, there is a large fore and aft deck space where the owner and guests can enjoy the outside area while remaining protected from onlookers. The interior features relatively small portholes, especially on the main and lower decks, which help to create a feeling of safety and security.
