A Deep Dive into the Mariana Trench

An infographic exploring the wonders of the deepest point on our planet, the Mariana Trench.

It’s said that we know more about the surface of the moon than we do our own oceans. The deepest parts of our oceans sit within the Mariana Trench and, with near-freezing temperatures and crushing pressure, are an environment that is in many ways as inhospitable as outer space. And, just like space, this remote underwater frontier offers mysteries that we can’t resist. How deep do our oceans go? What’s down there? And against all odds, can life exist at these depths? Over the last few decades we’ve begun to answer these questions, and in doing so have revealed a strange and fascinating alien world right here on Earth.

This infographic, commissioned by the BBC's Science Focus magazine, explores the features of the trench, the strange species that live in the depths of our oceans, the submersibles that allow us to access these remote areas, and the brave men and women who have made the journey.

Please note that this infographic was completed before the tragic death of Hamish Harding, and references his previous deep sea adventures but not his passing.
