Baby Fatso Urban Art Installation
4,000 Poster Plus Paste-Up
As many art installations and projects I have - it’s in the back of my
head brewing for the longest time.  The art projects that I find the
right place & have the resources for are few compared to the art I
would like to do and install.

This particular project is one such example.  The idea to re-use empty
space and cover it from top to bottom.  When I got to Berlin in March,
2010 I knew this was the perfect city to find such a space.  During
some explorations with a friends one evening in the summer of 2010 I
found the perfect location.  An old abandoned Brewery that is becoming
a living gallery.

I have used this “Baby Fatso” drawing in the past for smaller
installations in Seattle.  All I could think about is how manic and
tranquil it would look.  One baby tiled on top of the next.  The
drawing came from a mini series I did after a trip from Tokyo.  Out of
the series - I felt like it was the strongest.  And I’m pretty keen on
it in general.

It was not till fall 2010 in Berlin I started working on production.
In late October, early November I started printing as many posters as
I could afford to.  It was weekly visits to the print shop for months
on end.  In May, 2011 I felt like I was ready paste-up all these
posters.  My rough count was around 2,500.  Which at the time I
thought would be enough.  I used my room as the basis for this
calculation - which later proved to be a great deal off.

We made a date to go paste & got two good friends to help me.  Luckily
the Brewery backed up to the spree.  We tied a bucket to a rope and
threw it over this wall - then hoisted it up.  We used the water to
mix the glue.

The hardest part was getting the ceiling done.  Mainly due to working
with your hands upright for so long pasting & and pasting.  The idea
was to start in the middle with 2 rows - the start curving the posters
around to meet each other.  This worked out perfectly to cover all
three walls.

After working for a few hours - we noticed that we would not have
enough posters to cover the room.  In actuality my calculations were
half of what was needed.  A long day of pasting was over.
The following weeks I returned to the print shop to make as many
babies as I could.  After printing an additional 2,000 and cutting
them all out - I was ready for the second installment.

Picked another day - and with the help of some more friends we were
able to get all of it pasted-up and finished.  After months of
planning, printing, cutting, pasting it was 100% worth it.  The
installation looked like it did in my head.  Mission accomplished.

A Treasure Map has been made to see the final installation.
