Shriners Hospitals for Children - Tampa

Because of this hospital, there are many, many kids in Tampa Bay and around the globe that can walk, sit straight up, walk upright, grow, talk, and live the future they never would have had if they hadn't found Shriners. For nearly 5 years, I saw this highly trained staff accomplish things that were nothing short of AMAZING.

As a Media Specialist and Photographer, I designed a lot of print materials for patient education, outreach, events, donor recognition, signage and more. I used digital cameras to shoot events and during studio sessions. I shot and edited videos for medical justification of therapeutic equipment for patients, department tours on DVD, events like the 20th Anniversary Retrospecitve, and even summer camp!

Software: Illustrator, Photoshop, In Design. Final Cut Pro, and Compressor. Nikon and Sony digital cameras, MAC G5 video editing station.  Unless otherwise noted, photos were shot by me.
Logo Design: The client requested a logo for a new program that would recognize excellence in nursing. The flame is a nod to Florence Nightingale's candle, the modified gold star for excellence, and the heart is shaped like a bone because the Tampa Shriners Hospital treats orthopedics conditions. We used this logo to create a gold pin and plaque for each recipient.

Logo Design: I was honored and thrilled to be asked to create the only Shriners Girl Scout Badge! The client requested something that would be indicative of our orthopedic hospital, but could be used in other Shriners Hospitals. This "Careers in Healthcare" outreach program was started in the Tampa Hospital and then rolled out across the country. This teddy bear wears a Shriners Fez, a stethoscope, and a cast, which is applied by the young "doctors" after they weigh and measure their own bear patient. Colors were chosen to stand out against the green background of a Girl Scout's sash. We also produced "Doctor Bear" sitckers.
Logo Design: The client requested a logo that incorprated the phrase "20 years of caring" and the symbol of Shriners - a man carrying a young child and her crutches. This logo appeared everywhere, from custom-made invitations for VIPS, a commemorative brass medal, event table toppers, balloons, t-shirts, programs, and more.
Donor Cards: When someone makes a donation, they are sent a thank-you letter and information about the department that received the funds - like Child Life, Seating (Wheelchairs), Orthotics or others.
Photography:  This is what pure joy looks like.
Out of hundreds of submissions, this photo was one of only 50 chosen for a NACHRI national traveling display of photos from children's hospitals. This show included a stop on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC for a display before Congress. I directed this in-studio photo shoot. Photographers: Michael Moushey and Janet Barber.

This teen had always wanted to play the electric guitar and was surprised with a gift from a friend. But, how would she play it? The Orthotics and Prosthetic department came up with this special prosthetic arm and (pink) guitar pic attachment so that she could realize one of her dreams.
Photography: A mother holds her daughter in the post-op area after surgery to have a Halo device attached to her skull as part of a traction system (for treatment of scoliosis.) Her mother remains optimistic despite the obvious fatigue and strain. Her daughter mirrors that glass-half-full outlook; she is a bright, outgoing, bubbly little girl with a wonderful sense of humor.
Photography: A mother shares a quiet moment with her son.
Photography: To help alleviate a child's fears, this physician works with a doll first, explaining what will happen during the exam and establishing a rapor with the patient.
Department Tours: The purpose of these videos is to give prospective donors, patients, their families, and new volunteers an overview of what these departments do.  I shot, edited, created graphics and lower thrids, and authored the video on DVD, using Final Cut Pro, Compressor, Photoshop, Illustrator and iDVD. Voiceovers were voiced by the therapists.
