The Ocean and Carbon Capture

A series of diagrams explaining techniques that could enhance the ocean’s carbon-capturing capacity.
With more than 70% of the Earth’s surface covered by water, the oceans have the ability to combat global warming on a massive scale. In fact, since the dawn of the Industrial Revolution, a quarter of our CO2 emissions from the burning of fossil fuels have been absorbed by the ocean, lowering greenhouse gas levels in the atmosphere and limiting global warming.
As the climate emergency intensifies, some scientists believe the carbon-uptake of the oceans can be artificially accelerated, and have suggested a range of technologies, from the complex to the very simple that could help us in coming decades as the world struggles to move towards a low-carbon economy.
China Dialogue asked me to create a series of diagrams to depict six of these ideas, to accompany an article explaining each one in more detail. The artwork needed to be engaging, colourful and clear, and also use as little wording as possible, as China Dialogue publishes articles to both English and Chinese audiences. I also produced variations to be used on their social channels.
