A modular grid determines how elements are organized in a layout and helps build consistency. Contrary to popular belief, a grid is less about rigid constraints than it is about complete control over a composition. The goal of this project was to explore and push the boundaries of a modular grid through eight effective book covers including the front, back, and spine. The task at hand was to utilize the modular grid and create three levels of hierarchy. The methods in which this was executed included: scale, color, typographic color, rule lines, character weights, and aligning elements to modules within the grid. Through this exploration, one font was to be used throughout all of the compositions.
We were limited to black and white only and a few type size options. Additionally, we could only lock to the top left of the modules.
As the project progressed, color and rule lines were introduced as well as varying character weights.
We then experimented with extreme scale by making type excessively large or small all while establishing a clear hierarchy.
Throughout this exploration process, we learned to assign rules to our modular grids and follow them to
build consistency between the front, back, and spine of the book covers. The final product: eight distinct
book covers all employing the modular grid system.
