GATVOL - FINAL YEAR PROJECT 2023

Final Year Project 2023
WATTS UP!
The design problem in South Africa is centered on the persistent issue of load shedding, which is a controlled form of rolling blackouts caused by corruption, mismanagement, and insufficient infrastructure. Ideally, South Africa should have a reliable power supply, but this is far from reality. Load shedding has multifaceted impacts on the country, disrupting businesses, traffic, healthcare, education, and causing financial burdens on individuals. It also takes a toll on the mental health of South Africans, leading to stress and anxiety.

Load shedding not only affects the country as a whole but also forces individuals to adapt to an unpredictable and inconvenient lifestyle. This disruption hinders productivity, cooperation, and innovative solutions. The design problem, therefore, goes beyond addressing a technical issue; it also involves fostering resilience, optimism, and adaptability within the South African population to better cope with this challenging context.
THE SOLUTION
The solution is to shift the negative perception of load shedding in South Africa to a more positive and accepting one. Acknowledging that load shedding is an unavoidable part of life, I aim to create a humorous and sarcastic campaign that humorously addresses the common challenges it poses.
GATVOL BRAND GUIDE

THE ALL-IN-ONE LOADSHEDDING BOOK
The “Gatvol” entertainment book serves as an all-in-one survival guide for the challenges of loadshedding in South Africa. It offers a diverse range of entertainment sections, including word searches, Sudoku, and crossword puzzles, designed to keep individuals occupied and alleviate the frustrations of power outages.
Additionally, it provides practical tips and tricks on how to navigate loadshedding more easily, addressing a common concern for South Africans. To further enhance its utility, the book includes recipes based on what equipment and appliances you have to work with during loadshedding, ensuring that people can still enjoy
delicious meals during blackouts.
SOCIAL MEDIA
"WAARVOOR IS JY GATVOL?" CAMPAIGN
The “Waarvoor is jy gatvol?” social media campaign will encourage the public to engage with the campaign. I will prompt the users to share their frustrations and stories about loadshedding, fostering a sense of community and solidarity. By providing a platform for individuals to express their experiences, I create a space where people can connect, relate, and collectively voice their concerns, making the campaign a dynamic forum for shared experiences and support.

BRAND COLLABORATIONS
Collaborating with other brands is crucial for my campaign’s success as it allows me to tap into their expertise, resources, and existing customer base. These partnerships not only enhance the practical value of my campaign by incorporating relevant products and
services but also help in spreading the message to a wider audience.

Additionally, such collaborations can bring a fresh perspective, creativity, and diversity to my campaign, making it more engaging and effective. By working together with other brands, I can create a collective effort that is greater than the sum of its parts, ultimately
benefiting both my campaign and the brands involved.
