Narrative & Curatorial Photography

Brief

This project consist of the curation of a horizontal layout that creates an engaging yet abstract narrative highlighting one of the following visual qualities; Shape, texture, pattern and tonal values. Even though the curation is abstract and should inspire various narratives depending on the viewer, there should be an immediate understanding of the visual sequence. The layout had to consist of five images: three documentary images and two fashion images.

Deliverables

01 | Curated photography board, consisting of five greyscale images (3 documentary, 2 fashion).

Design Strategy

Exploration in documentary photography quickly highlighted the type of image I was drawn to, and informed my route for the fashion photography. I sought high contrast in both tone and texture, and often utilised very high and very low angles. The editing and curation of my photographs worked to emphasise the deep textural and tonal contrast, ultimately developing a collection of images with a slightly voyeuristic appeal.

I realised that some of my selected images lacked the sense of observation that I hoped to create, even though the biting contrast was there. A lack of action in the fashion photoshoot and a lack of visual tension in the documentary shoot stood out to me. Therefore, I selected and took new images for my redo, to better communicate the fly-on-the-wall narrative.
