02 | Editorial Design: Narrative and Curatorial Photography (Redo)
Project Brief
The objective of this project is to create a narrative driven photography layout with one or more of the following qualities; shape, texture, pattern, colour and tonal values. The narrative should act as a 'concept' that is curated through photography. Documentary and fashion photography is showcased in the final horizontal layout. The overall aim is to capture visually striking scenes and to use photographs to convey an abstract narrative.
Deliverables
1. Three black and white documentary photographs
2. Two black and white fashion photographs
3. Final layout of a series of 5 photographs, presented as a horizontal narrative
4. Printed layout
Design Strategy
The overall design strategy was to capture visually striking images and curate the best ones in a narrative that could hold any meaning to the viewer. The approach was to capture calming yet somehow unsettling images with qualities of shape, texture, colour and pattern, that opens the conversation to the viewer. The documentary photographs consist of objects that I personally come across on a regular basis, while the fashion images were carefully and mindfully curated to enhance the overall feeling of the narrative. Even though I planned ahead at the start of the project, the final layout was totally unforeseen, because for those few weeks my perspective of my surroundings completely changed and I found myself much more observant than normal.
A redo was required based on the feedback of the first project. A new layout was constructed, however the narrative and approach stayed the same for the most part. This layout does not incorporate colour like the first iteration. Some of the photos were retaken, and some were new photographs entirely. One documentary and one fashion image was reused, but re-edited and cropped to fit with the new layout.
Final Layout
The final horizontal layout captures qualities of shape, pattern and texture.
