In the summer of 2023, I embraced the creative challenge of designing a T-shirt for Saturday Rides, a Toronto-based cycling group. The goal was to create a mascot devoid of a defined gender that resonated with the spirit of both Toronto and the summertime vibe. After a lively brainstorming session, the Sun emerged as the unanimous favourite among the group members, symbolizing the warmth and energy that encapsulate their weekend rides.
Through design reference research, it was decided that the character and typographic elements should pursue a retro style. The creative process involved quick sketches to determine the mascot's position on the bicycle, followed by vectorization and simplification for screen printing. This collaborative endeavour showcased my creativity and ability to synthesize diverse ideas into a visually compelling design. The resulting T-shirt now serves as a distinctive emblem for the Saturday Rides crew, capturing the essence of their shared passion for cycling, exploration, and craft beer.
