GRAPHIC NOVEL THE FIRST ARTIST
I am working on a short A4 comic book about the first artist — an emotional and touching story written by my colleague. The GOAL is to develop storyboards, characters and their environment in a visually captivating unique style that will become the base for an animated short movie.
I would like to share with you the creation process and the very first page — wide shot of one day in the world where the artist is born.
THE STORY
Against the backdrop of a world consumed by the raw, unfiltered struggle for existence, the first artist was born. Why?

In a world dominated by the pursuit of food and procreation, why did a solitary soul first pick up a tool to express their imagination onto the canvas of rocks?
THE SOLUTION
I created main characters using shapes, proportions and colors to convey all the characters' traits and emotional role they play in the story. All the main characters look different but archetypically they are familiar to the viewers:
huge squarish Father and round strong Mama
sharp pointy Bully
and a young Woman
Main character — the first artist — is a bit different from the rest: smaller, the clothes are floral, no fur, eyes bigger and detailed, color more saturated.
I created a fast rough STORYBOARD of the first chapter to plan the visual storytelling, rhythm and dramatic composition of the emotional chapter.
The comic pages navigate viewers through the story, and help them connect to it, sympathize with the characters and wonder — what happens next?
THE WORLD in the story is a fictional Stone Age land, with huge wild forests and crowded cages. Low saturation colors add mysterious past-time vibe.
I ensure contrast between flat characters and background by capturing almost only the essence of the forest, rather than its details. Flat, raw style of the characters with more details stand out in this forest.
Also, I aim for the comic book to be cinematic, which is why the light of every scene is playing a big role in this graphic world.
