Virgil Abloh Tribute - Poster Design
The Futur Academy organised in 2022 a mock exhibition featuring posters created by their designer students, as a tribute to Virgil Abloh's work.
Chris Do and 2 typographers from Monotype selected 3 posters and provided useful critique and advice (watch the Youtube video here).
The Brief
Each participant was tasked to design one poster to celebrate the life of the late Virgil Abloh as part of a mock traveling exhibition along with some of the Virgil’s most iconic pieces. They selected one item from either the Louis Vuitton or Off-White collection to use as a creative springboard for their design.
My Contribution
After watching this critique, I was really eager to seize the opportunity to improve my own design skills. I took each one of the 3 posters and revisited the design with some changes based on the advice provided by Chris Do, Charles Nix and Terrance Weinzierl and also based on my own inspiration.
Disclaimer : This is purely a training exercice and each designer will be duly credited.
Ahmed Abdullah - Poster 1
The first poster was designed by Ahmed Abdullah. Please check his project here :
I made only a few changes to his amazing design :
- the date of birth and death right beneath the name of Virgil Abloh
- a bigger suitcase (vectorised image) and red stripped square
- deconstruction and breaking boundaries inserted between the red stripes
- added another visual element from Virgil Abloh's design : the pointed red cross to guide the eye through the design.
Veeksha Mehndiratta - Poster 2
The second poster was designed by Veeksha Mehndiratta.
I made bigger changes to this design in order to ensure its legibility :
- the name of the mock exhibition and most of the text in white
- I kept only the idea of round shaped text
- played with the opacity of the text in order to add depth to the design.
Donni Krainess - Poster 3
The last poster was designed by Donni Krainess.
I made 2 main changes to his great design :
- replaced the main central text with the name of the mock exhibition instead
- shifted the black border in order to create a sense of playfulness and deconstruction.
I'm very grateful for all the amazing content that the Futur Academy is providing on Youtube and a special big up for the 3 talented designers that inspired me for this project.
And thank you for stopping by!
