Traversing Time: A Reverent Exploration of Relics
International Competition Entry
LOCATION: Curinga, Italy
YEAR: 2024
TYPE: Cultural Heritage
The primary objectives of the proposal for Reuse Thermae Curinga are to provide a restrained yet distinct design approach, acting as a catalyst to reveal the hidden histories and memories of the ruin while framing a new systematic order of the site. The addition aims to gently guide visitors through the past to appreciate the thermae's historical significance and manage public access for a better protection.
The scorching sun of Acconia stretches its rays, casting shadows upon the worn walls of the ruin. Time dances along, weaving threads of eternity and history into the minds of visitors. The new intervention appreciates these memories and atmospheric moments brought by material and natural phenomena, adhering to the idea of keeping the Thermae open and unaltered. It establishes an intriguing visit route, minimizing disturbance to the ancient structure and site. The sunken terrain, remaining structures, tall grasses across the site, and surrounding picturesque agricultural fields all contribute to memories and evidence of time. The design avoids interrupting such peace. It gently invites everyone to stroll down to the Thermae, guiding people to glance downward, gaze upward, and observe from a distance.
