Serene - Postpartum wellness reimagined!

1 in 3 women experience pelvic floor disorders in their lifetime, yet 93% of women are insufficiently informed about the pelvic floor. When a woman decides to become a mother, her pelvic floor expands three times its original size. Therefore, the risk of experiencing a pelvic floor collapse intensifies significantly after pregnancy. With the arrival of a new member in the family, the mother naturally puts her needs aside and focuses on the newborn.

To delve deeper into this area, my team and I conducted market landscape research and realized that there are a minuscule number of products currently designed to help postpartum women regain their pelvic floor. After talking to a few pelvic floor therapists, we learned about overactive and underactive pelvic floors. If a woman uses products in the market without consulting a professional, they are more likely to cause more damage to their pelvic floor. During this research process, we also learned the importance of breathing exercises in the healing journey for a new mother. The first eight weeks postpartum is the time when breathing exercises would be most beneficial. If done correctly, they would fast-track the healing journey of a new mother.

In response, we have developed Serene—a meticulously designed breathing belt aimed at guiding and visualizing the breathing process for postpartum women. This innovative product prompts users at regular intervals to initiate specific breathing exercises while providing real-time feedback to rectify any incorrect breathing patterns. Through Serene, our primary objectives are to raise awareness about the importance of maintaining a robust pelvic floor and, secondarily, to alleviate the challenges faced by new mothers during the postpartum period.
