UNDER YOUR INTERNET - idle animations
My last work used animation‘s enchantment to convey ideas in the framework of
political education. „Under your Internet“ is a project introducing teenagers to
alternative models of data governance and raising their awareness of surveillance capitalism‘s extractive practices. The hope is to empower young people to envi-
sion alternative futures about how their data is used online. The result of this
endeavor is an educational tool and interactive online platform. Here, attendants can take a quiz to find out which form of data governance suits their preferen-
ces. At the end of the test, you are introduced to a form of data governance representing your needs and an animated character embodying said concept.
In a dialogue with the data creature one can learn about alternatives to how our data is handled online. I conceptualized and animated five avatars playing on
the models presented on the website. My focus in these pieces was to make the animations appeal to teenagers. It was important that they were personable and
conveyed aspects of the specific model they represented. Breathing life into these technological beings, I was in a close creative exchange with the team behind
„Under Your Internet“ - Allison Rowe, Fred Wordie, Meg Obata, and Tania de Sousa Dias. Here, animation is used for political education, making complex con-
