Design + Human Interaction = Translation of Message

Design that requires the tactile reasoning of a user to translate or communicate a message.

I have always been interested in analogue communication and record-keeping. I have an affinity for objects and ephemera that hold stories of the people that loved them, the hands they passed through, the journeys they took, the repurposing of them - the provenance. Why do people collect things? What has caused the variation of objects over eras? What makes people connect with things they have crafted themselves or that others have crafted for them? All these questions come back to material culture. I believe that the process is what connects us - the work we put into something, the figuring out, the decoding, the unfolding of a story. Something that is particularly lacking with the instant gratification of digital technology. I am interested in exploring design for those who have forgotten the analogue experience. I am keen to bring people back to valuing time in a different way - not just to save it but to use it - to experience. Although I have no idea where this research will lead, I have been exploring possible routes of enquiry in the hope that further knowledge regarding form might be able to inform or spark further ideas…
