Samfundet Rebrand

CASE
Studentersamfundet i Trondhjem (The Student Society in Trondheim, Samfundet for short) is an organization for students in Trondheim, Norway. Owned and run by over 16 000 students, Samfundet is the social cornerstone for students in Trondheim and serves as an arena for culture, concerts, theatre, debates and socializing.

ASSIGNMENT
As part of my bachelors thesis, I examined the mulitfaceted challenges and opportunities associated with the redesign of organizations, using The Student Society in Trondheim as a case study. A new visual identity was developed as a part of the thesis, modernizing the appearance while preserving the organisation’s history and tradition.

SOLUTION
The solution is a visual identity that further develops and modernizes Samfundet’s existing identity elements. A refined icon and colour palette that represents the organization’s building and heritage, grotesque typefaces that provide a clean and modern expression, and design compositions rooted in modern design principles.

The identity was developed in dialogue with students who use Samfundet. Through qualitative interviews and a visual analysis of the current design, the results from the two empirical methods are used as the basis for the visual choices made in the redesign. It is argued that  refreshing the visual expression will better appeal to new students while retaining the already established target group, and help drive the historical organization into the future.
