Project 1 - 2D Art
This post is here to briefly showcase and document the process my team and I took for the first project in 2D Art in our course. It consisted of creating a level for a 2D platformer game, by creating first a visual mockup and then making assets and replicating it inside the Unity game engine.

This work was divided into groups of three students, with each group having a set of four symbols they had to incorporate into the artwork. Ours was as follows: cage; tower; devil; magnet. Each member had to include at least two of these for the work. In my case I included all of them except for the magnets.

We quickly decided that our game was inside various towers, ranging into the skies, with hanging cages with demon lackeys inside, held up by magnetism. My illustration reflects a portion of the game amidst the towers, when ground is no longer visible and any rock around is floating alongside the towers.
I began by creating some thumbnails for my portion of the project, fitting all of them in a single image. I tried to keep consistent with the sizing and the tones for each layer of content. Out of these only 3 were chosen, where I moved on to making 4 skecthes for each.
The first thumbnail sketch
The second thumbnail sketch
The final thumbnail sketch, which was the one picked
From these twelve sketches, I ended up choosing the very last one, as it fit the most the idea I wanted to get across. The next phase was the detailed sketch.
For this portion of the project, it was mostly tweaking a couple of things, as the concepts were already laid down at this point. After this I did some color studies to find the best suiting palette.
Most of these color studies turned out to consist of a main colors with slight compliments and hue deviations from it. I decided to choose the second one (blue) for the final mockup.
This is how the final mockup turned out. The biggest change here was the slight orange tint to the brighter elements of the image. After this it was time to put this in Unity and create the final level.
Here are both the tileset and the asset spritesheet, that were used to create the level. I strived to make these versatile and i think the final level showcases it fairly well.
Here is the final level. It is almost twice the size of the visual mockup and while being only made of reused assets, it still feels fresh and cohesive to the previously estabilished parts.

And with this ends the documentation of the process of making this project. Another one might be posted for the next one.
