Оборона Маріуполя, міста на сході України, тривала 86 днів і стала героїчним і безпрецедентним подвигом в історії незалежної України. Захисники, серед яких були бійці різних підрозділів, зокрема бійці бригади «Азов» (на той час — полку), зіткнулися з переважаючими силами російської армії та потрапили в повне оточення. У них не було ні припасів, ні засобів для евакуації поранених і вбитих. Останнім гарнізоном, який захищав місто, був металургійний завод «Азовсталь». Виконуючи наказ про збереження життя воїнів, захисники опинилися на окупованій ворогом території, де їх чекає обмін. Щоб пришвидшити повернення бійців, родини захисників Маріуполя створили Асоціацію сімей захисників «Азовсталь». Умови утримання в’язнів нагадують концтабори Другої світової війни, і є надія, що міжнародні організації втрутяться та вимагатимуть від росії дотримання Женевських конвенцій.
The defense of Mariupol, a city in eastern Ukraine, lasted 86 days and was a heroic and unprecedented feat in the history of independent Ukraine. The defenders, who included soldiers from various units, including the Azov Brigade (a regiment at the time), faced superior russian forces and were completely surrounded. They had no supplies or means to evacuate the wounded and dead. The last garrison to defend the city was the Azovstal metallurgical plant. Fulfilling an order to save the lives of the soldiers, the defenders found themselves in the enemy-occupied territory where they were to be exchanged. To speed up the return of the soldiers, the families of Mariupol's defenders created the Azovstal Defenders' Families Association. The conditions of detention are reminiscent of World War II concentration camps, and there is hope that international organizations will intervene and demand that russia comply with the Geneva Conventions.
