A igreja matriz foi construída em 1763, no local onde aventureiros na região haviam erguido uma pequena capela dedicada a São João Batista em 1713. O edifício apresenta duas torres redondas sobre uma base quadrada, dispostas diagonalmente em relação ao corpo central da igreja. Lucio Costa atribui o estilo de Antonio Francisco Lisboa à concepção do frontispício e do arco-cruzeiro, destacando a inovação audaciosa de posicionar as torres nessa disposição diagonal. O Aleijadinho também contribuiu como escultor, começando com a imagem de São João Batista em pedra-sabão, instalada no nicho da fachada principal, e posteriormente trabalhando no interior da igreja, esculpindo a tarja do arco-cruzeiro na mesma pedra. The main church was built in 1763, on the site where adventurers in the region had erected a small chapel dedicated to Saint John the Baptist in 1713. The building features two round towers on a square base, positioned diagonally in relation to the central body of the church. Lucio Costa attributes the style of Antonio Francisco Lisboa to the design of the facade and the crossing arch, highlighting the innovative boldness of placing the towers in this diagonal arrangement. Aleijadinho also contributed as a sculptor, starting with the image of Saint John the Baptist in soapstone, placed in the niche of the main facade, and later working inside the church, carving the lintel of the crossing arch in the same stone.
