Nature Around Me

This photo is of a line in our backyard between the rocks we’ve lain down and a patch of grass. We often cut back the grass but the grass does not care. It continues to grow and push forward despite ou best efforts. It is inevitable.
I have always liked moss. It may not be the most colorful or eye catching plant, but it breathes I’ve into whatever area it is a part of. Maybe because it is often seen around shaded areas and water. Throughout this photo essay I play with perspective quite a bit, I want to make even the smallest plant feel massive. We often disregard the small things in life, I want to look more closely at them.
Dandelions are some of my favorite plants. They are completely edible, incredibly hardy, and bring a sense of nostalgia for a simpler time. I always loved dandelion wishes and seeing the tufts of fuzz fly away with the wind. I friend to make he dandelion off centered to help draw the eye more.
This is one the flowers we planted on the side of the house. It blooms every time summer comes close and I always get excited when I see it. I tried to create more depth using the background in this photo. I feel like it cam out well.
I used a bit of forced perspective again. I wanted it to feel like we were walking through the grass. Our lawn is significantly overgrown, and I love it when it gets like this. The lawn just feels more alive this way, chaotic and loud with the sounds of bugs. It is beautiful in a different way to a well trimmed lawn.
More forced perspective as I try to make this scene more somber or impactful. Dead leaves litter the ground and the moss here is dying. Death is common in nature, so much so we don’t even notice it, but it is death all the same. However even death is used in nature, and food for new life like fungus or just a temporary state of being for plants.
Last but not least a small ladybug on a stalk of grass. I was frantic as I tried to get this photo and because of that it created an interesting foreground and background with different blades of grass. While the lady bug may be blurry its stark color draws the eye. I personally like this photo, for more of the journey I had to go through to get it.
