The Border Collie breed originated in Northumberland along the borders of Scotland and England. Originally referred to as the “Scotch Sheep Dog” the Border Collie is descended from the old British droving breeds that the Vikings used to herd reindeer with some spaniel breeds added in. Sheep herding was introduced to the British Isles by the Romans and sparked various Celtic clans to develop a new herding dog that would handle sheep well. The resulting breeds have come to be named after the regions in which they are known and include Welsh Sheepdogs, Northern Sheepdogs, Highland Collies, and Scotch Collies. The Scottish heritage of the Border Collie is evident in the use of the Scottish dialect word “collie” which is used to describe the dogs.
The Border Collie is a very high energy dog and has great stamina. They thrive when they have a job to do. They need an activity that will keep them occupied and give them plenty of exercise in order to prevent destructive behavior. Because of this, along with a strong desire to please, the Border Collie excels in any type of herding. Being an extremely trainable breed, the Border Collie is one of the top breeds that compete in trials of Competitive Obedience, Agility, Frisbee, Flyball, and Trick Performing. Their ability to focus and think for themselves has also served them well in the world of police work, search and rescue, and as guide dogs for the blind.

The Border Collie was first recognized by the AKC in 1995.
