I was commissioned by Smithsonian Magazine to create an illustration for their 'Phenomenon' section, for which the theme was "Maps". This specific article was about the brain's ability to re-map after face transplant surgery.
Without a face, corresponding brain regions are devoid of activity when scanned. However, after a face transplant, the new and old nerves communicate and the connection can get stronger. With time and practice, the patient can recover some movement and sensation.
