Industrial, Yet Promising

Graphic Design - College for Creative Studies
Class: Intro to Visual Communication II
Instructor: Colleen Hill

This is a book made to represent one city block of the Rivertown district of Detroit. This block in particular, boxed in by St. Aubin, Franklin, Orleans, and Atwater streets, has a unique sense of duality. At first glance, the streets are broken, crumbling, and deserted, but once you enter the buildings on the street, you start to see a sense of renewal and entrepreneurship that is transforming the city.

The goal was to create a book that makes use of the five senses to describe the area. The book is intentionally beaten and battered to represent the rough exterior of this block, while the inside contains captivating imagery and interviews that show the exciting renewal that can be found within. Originally, the book was marinated in smoke from a fire to make use of the sense of smell to evoke a visceral response.
