Magazine Structural Analysis - Marie Claire

This project was an analysis of the typographic structure of a magazine publication. It was a partner project, and my partner, Blaise Bolemon, and I, chose to analyzie Marie Claire magazine and how it's typographic hierarchies and structure work to create the publication.

Teams of two, select a print and screen-based enterprise from this list:

Teams will design a 12 page reference pamphlet about one of the above periodicals that includes (1) an overview of the title; (2/3) a taxonomy of the parts found in the print publication; (4/5) a comparison/contrast of the print and the digital manifestations; (6/7) a detailed comparison of three or four typographic details across the two mediums; and (8/9) analysis and diagrams of both grid structures; plus the front and back covers. The design of the document is a form of “information graphics” and will be referenced by outside readers (other design students--your classmates).

COVER/INSIDE COVER: Title and nature of the publication.

SPREAD 1 (PAGE 1): Overview describing mission, content, audience, frequency of publication, production values, etc.

SPREAD 2 (PAGE 2/3): Identify and Analyze the typographic roles and hierarchical relationships found within the print version of the publication--from the tiniest folio or contact link to the grandest headline--plus the kinds and uses of imagery, symbols, graphic elements. Build a taxonomy (or “categorization”) of the elements and structure that make up the print periodical. Taxonomies define groups of things that share characteristics within a larger thing, or concept. Name broad groups, then place sub-groups within those broad groups, and so on. The collections of things that make up taxonomies are connected through some kind of relationship. Examples of taxonomies:

SPREAD 3 (PAGE 4/5): Compare and Contrast the print and screen versions of the publication -- such as hierarchies, typographic choices, use of color, photography, illustrations -- to describe similarities and differences between the two. Consider using comparative maps, or diagrams, writing, and/or other means to clarify the comparisons.

SPREAD 4 (PAGE 6/7): Describe Typography Specific Attributes across the two versions. Select two or three attributes from the analysis above and visually describe similarities that connect two, and differences that reflect the limits and affordances of each media.

SPREAD 5 (PAGE 8/9): Grid Analysis Annotated diagrams of both grid structures.
