Universal design refers to broad-spectrum ideas meant to produce buildings, products and environments that are inherently accessible to both people without disabilities and people with disabilities. The term “Universal design” was coined by the architect Ronald L. Mace to describe the concept of designingall products and the built environment to be aesthetic and usable to the greatest extent possible by everyone, regardless of their age, ability, or status in life. It emerged from slightly earlier barrier-free concepts, the broader accessibility movement, and adaptive and assistive technology and also seeks to blend aesthetics into these core considerations.
Who are the unmet users ?Wheel chair – can barely enter between 2 aisles. Cannot reach the higher levels of products. Angle of viewing products at the highest level will cause the person to not even see the productfully. Tough to use the trolley or the basket.Blind – no concept of navigation in the store. All references on sides are riddled with products.Tough to identify the products. Products are simply placed which can cause the person to put things down when moving and not knowing where to put them back. Independency of exploration is tough .Crutches – cannot use either a basket or a trolley.Fractures at the hand - Cannot carry a basket and choose products, full strain on one hand as the weight of products increase.
