3D Animation
Digitial Animation Center, University of Colorado Denver
2007-2010
After receiving an Associates of Applied Science in Motion Graphics Animation (3D) at Red Rocks Community College, I made the decision to pursue a full Bachelors in the field. Having looked over the available programs in the area, I settled on the Digital Animation Center at UCD; a program which appropriately placed 3D Animation in the realm of Fine Arts and film making, not computer science.

The culmination of 18+ months of hardship, scrapped designs, countless video edits, and an ungodly amount of energy drinks became known as "A Complex Villainelle," a clever play on words that one of our own animators (Nathan Billington!) came up with. Clocking in at nearly 6 minutes and featuring a variety of main and secondary characters as well as numerous sets and an ambitious cityscape.

Written by radio broadcaster Jonathan Goldstein, known for his contributions to NPR, we were tasked with creating a visual parallel to Jonathan's alternate reality which somehow paired the Penguin from Batman mythology with Mary Poppins! As one of the premiere 3D Animation programs in the country, we received various visits from generous and candid professionals in the field, all of whom told us the same things: there's too many characters, too many sets, and it's too ambitious! You'll never finish this if you don't cut back! Fortunately for us, through a dedication and group ethic which carried us through 4 years of unrelenting discipline in everything from organic modeling and texturing to lighting, dynamics, particles and character animation (did I mention we got an overview of animation concepts pioneered by Disney?).
Abe
Modeling/Texturing
Abe is a character I modeled, textured, posed, and rendered for an organic modeling class. Created originally by the game studio Oddworld Inhabitants for the Playstation, Abe instantly became one of my favorite characters for his quirky, comic, deeply unique character design. I jumped at the opportunity to recreate this character in high definition. Painting almost exclusively with Photoshop brushes, I then overlaid numerous photo textures of wrinkles, skin, and other organic elements.
