Live and Work in Charlottesville
Second Year Summer Studio

The objective of this project was to chose one of four given sites in Charlottesville and design a space for a couple to live and work in. On a compact site my idea was to create a space that was define by two opposing planes and composed of multiple double hieght spaces to create a sectional complexity. To the North is a defensive plane, a heavy concrete wall that is almost completely solid in the living space on the upper levels, to create privacy from the neighbors. To the South is a open and welcoming plane, and open shaft that allows southern light into each floor and containing a grand staircase that runs from the ground floor to the roof terrace. I wanted to give the interior space a sectional complexity with a variety of ceiling heights and create a sense of connectivity between floors with double height spaces that are open to the floor above.
All drawing were hand drafting and scanned into the computer to add materials using Photoshop
Morven Farm Barn Repurpose and Cabin Design
Third Year Studio

For this project we were given the objective of developing an area of Morven Farm to provide housing and places of gathering for groups of people whole will use the site for multiple days and for many different purposes. In my design I repurposed an existing horse barn to house large groups of students. With the addition of a hanging sleeping loft within each barn stall, one or two students can occupy each of the twenty stalls. With a table that can be raised or lowered beneath the sleeping loft, the lower portion of the stall can be used for a variety of activities. The addtion on the Western side of the barn would be a place to gather and interact with others and includes stepped gardens for the guests to tend together during their stay. Whether it be to wash their hands and face at a communal basin as the sun rises in the East, tend the gardens and gather food for lunch, or contemplate the days work in front of a hearth as the sun sets in the West, the barn would be a place for people to come together. In addition to repurposing the barn, I developed small modern cabins for groups of two to four poeple. These cabins are composed of a heavy base embedded in the slopped ground to the Northeast of the barn and a light weight steel and glass structure that floats above the earth. The lower portion of the glass facade pivots open to extend the interior space outward to allow guests to connect with nature.
