Children in urban spaces are curtailed in play by lack of physical space, security and an absence of facilities. They tend therefore, to depend on technology and virtual media which further estranges them from their natural environments, limits physical activity and makes play insular. To tackle these issues, I first observed and documented various children at play. Their learning methods and needs were mapped as was their level of understanding. The other stakeholders of the toy market too were interviewed.
This information led me to the development of Insectival - a life sized board game for 6 to 8 year old children that introduces them to the world of insects. The game is designed to encourage a more physical and social mode of play as well as to facilitate environmental education in a creative and interactive manner.

There were many challenges encountered during the design process: understanding the needs of children from different age groups, generating logical content for the game and finding materials and a manufacturing process that is both user and buyer friendly.

The game at its current prototype stage has opened up a number of possibilities - an augmented reality version or an online extension to allow for collaboration and learning about the insect kingdom; as teaching aid in schools and so on.
