THE CATALYST

After researching cosmetic packaging I noticed two things. First was that lot of the packaging looked very similar; black and very minimal. Secondly, many brands that promised to be cruelty free did not have any signs or symbols representing that on their packaging. These two observations was the catalyst to creating brand packaging that utilized colour, illustrations and visually displayed their cruelty-free status loudly.
THE BRAND

Given the chance to design packaging for a cosmetic brand, I also chose to develop the brand itself. The brand I created is called Habitat because of it’s focus on supporting organizations that help preserve animal habitats. Habitat is a 100% cruelty free cosmetic brand that isn’t afraid to show their love for animals. Being a brand that targets young adults, I wanted to create value box sets that would be provide more items at valued price.
THE GAIN

Through this assignment I gained knowledge of branding guidelines for the cosmetic industry. Required warnings and canadian ingredient symbols affected how much space I had for aesthetic detailing, but I was able to overcome that by utilizing all sides of the packaging. I also learnt to take into consideration the size and shape of the packages in relation to how it will sit on a shelf to be sold.
