The Sacramento Museum

The Sacramento Museum is a unique museum concept attached to the Sacramento Amtrak Station. The concept for the museum is to serve as a preview for all other museums in Sacramento. Patrons traveling by train can stop into the museum to take a look at what the city has to offer and enjoy their time waiting for their connecting train. The museum showcases exhibits from the Sacramento Automobile Museum, the Sacramento Train Museum, The California Museum, The Children’s Museum, and The Crocker.
Color plays a large role by creating separate spaces within the museum to produce a unique atmosphere for each exhibit. The walls along the perimeter are a neutral gray to paint a blank canvas. Pops of bright, fun colors are used on accent walls in the different exhibit spaces to highlight each exhibit to its fullest and create the desired atmosphere. The psychology of color was researched to decide which colors to pick. Yellow is connected to feelings happiness, green symbolizes nature, blue is relaxing, and orange radiates energy.
Principles of universal design is a focus for the project. The entire museum is accessible to people of all abilities. Signage height, clearances and exhibit displays were given extra attention to allow anyone who visits the ability to participate fully.
