Stages of Depression and Mental Illnesses

My concentration aims to raise awareness of social stigma attached to mental illnesses by making viewers uncomfortable through surrealism. By making people uncomfortable, they are able to experience how mental illness sufferers feel when they are stigmatized. Viewers stand around the pieces, watching, as the figures suffer silently -- an experience that many mental illness sufferers are familiar with.
1) Guilt - felt for having a mental illness, or for no reason at all.
2) Emptiness - physical and literal interpretation (eating disorders often accompany depression)
3) Exhaustion - consistent and debilitating
4) Slipping - inability to function anymore due to symptoms, approaching death
5) Pulled Up - recovery from depression
