ORGAN-O-RAMA Graphic Design Capstone Exhibition

The project was a call for action and support of a political, social, or enviromental cause. As my graphic design thesis, this project was the culmination of the concepts, theories, and processes that were covered by the Bachelors in Fine Art in Graphic Design program. We (I and my classmates) had to complete the call to action project and exhibit it.
The second part was the publication of examples of our progress. This was a collected catalog for the class of 2015.
The third part was the external assessor in which they did a critique of our portfolios and exhibition projects.
For the last section we were required to give a public presentation of our work and design philosophy, focusing on our capstone and how it fits into our other works.
By the time I went to get my driver’s license renewed, our professor already had given the brief for the project, so when the DMV window worker asked me if I wanted to become an organ donor, it gave me the idea of making my project about that topic. It is a topic that is very extensive and interesting. There were many things that I learned during the making of this project, like what happens to your body once the organs are removed, and whether rich people go up the waiting list faster since they are wealthy. Also, I wanted to inform the viewer that they can save more than one life; it is not necessary to be a living donor, but once you die your organs go to waste.
I originally planned to make Bob as a small box, like the board game Operation, in which players would have to “operate” the patient by using tweezers. When I mentioned my idea to a classmate, he gave me the idea of doing it bigger- poster size. So while designing and sketching Bob, I also had to sketch and plan how to make the box in which Bob would be framed. Bob would be layed out in a 3/4 view, giving it a 3-dimensonal sense, and have flaps that would open to reveal the different organs that can be donated. In this case I used the heart, cornea, kidney, and bone marrow. Each organ would contain information about the viability in which the organ would survive outside the body.
As I mentioned before, the strongest part of the project was the illustrations, so I had to put more emphasis on that aspect of project. The poster would have myths and facts, and light information about people waiting for organs and statistics. The brochures would have the additional information in a more concise way- the transplant process, living donation, where to register to become a donor, and a brief history of organ transplant. The stickers were mainly illustrations that had information on where to register to become a donor.
