The Looking Glass

The best stories always begin with a portal into the unknown. That first uncertain moment; standing on the precipice of something magical and then losing all fear, is something I have been interested in capturing for a while now. The classic example of this being Lewis Carroll's 'Through the looking glass' (the literary inspiration, of course, behind this piece), eventually I'd like to try an interpretation of Narnia (the wardrobe), or perhaps Coraline.
The finished piece. As our protagonist edges forward into unreality, the very fabric of space and time shifts, loops and bends to incorporate her transition from one world to another.
A close-up of the mirror detail.
First stage sketch. Once I had inked this version of the mirror, it looked a bit bare and unassuming, so it is a lot more ornate in the final version.
The rabbit also felt too flat, so I gave him a makeover.
I think this piece would look good silkscreened on a scatter pillow or something similar. A portal to the unknown, on your couch!
