At the beginning of my final year at University Wildstone approched our year with a competition brief - they specialise in high end Advertising screens and wanted us to design 10 p10 screens situated along Oxford Street, along with 4 accompanying folly structures.

My Project, The Beacon, focused on the idea of Oxford street being heavily populated by tourists, so populated that it can be very overwhelming. The Beacon stuctures are interactive tourist information points with free wifi and charging points, each one tailored to the section of the street it is in (from high end stores to high street brands) showing things like michellin star restaurants and how to book them for those using the beacon at the high end stores, to where to get the best street food and free events closer to the high street stores.

I wanted to create a tourist information point with a twist - a safety aspect.

The whole idea for The Beacon came about as I got off the train at the wrong stop last summer in London, my phone was dead and I had no idea where I was. I stopped multiple people for help and after an hour and a half someone let me use their phone to call a cab and waited with me until it arrived. I am lucky that I'm from the UK and someone actually stopped to help, if you dont speak English and get separated from whoever you re travelling with on Oxford Street, the only way to find them is using your phone. The Beacon allows that to happen.
