User Research & Assessment Overview

I really like doing user research.
I like figuring out what makes users tick, getting to understand certain behaviors and their context, and, most importantly why they do what they do.

It's exhilerating to work with product team members to help them understand this. Together we brainstorm and sketch and iterate on how we can make software and processes work with that behavior and expectations.

Here's a laundry list of activities that I have led. I like doing all these things (well, not recruiting and scheduling so much but necessary).

User research and assessment activities:
~ research plans (single method, multiple methods)
~ user tests (plan, recruit and schedule, script, create test materials, facilitate, analyze, recommendations)
~ interviews (in person, phone)
~ contextual inquiry
~ surveys
~ personas & profiles definition
~ focus groups
~ heuristic evaluations
~ competitive analysis
~ card sorts
~ navigation testing
~ task analysis
~ process flows and mind maps
~ co-design, design partners
~ wireframes
~ specifications
~ set up usability lab
I have employed many of these methods for mobile and desktop applications and hardware (tablet ergonomics) and out-of-the-box module set up.

I have worked in several verticals and product types: mobile point-of-sale, security analytics and authentication, consumer, financial services, and healthcare insurance.

I should tell you that I've been a UXD for quite a while, too, and enjoy the up-front analysis and overall framing of the problem and subsequent solution (interactions and flows).

My case studies (project samples) in this portfolio include many of these activities listed above.
