Classy and Fabulous: The LBD

Look into your wardrobe, what’s in there that even after many ‘Do I’, ‘Do I not’ you just could never get rid of them. Chances are that it could be a vintage bag that your mother gave you, a classic white t-shirt, your favourite pair of blue jeans or could it be a little black dress.

The little black dress is the epitome of pure elegance, simply timeless, a revisiting icon serving both as the simplest as well as the sexiest of all garments in your wardrobe. It’s the answer to every ‘what should I wear to..’ from parties to class reunions. As loved by all women, this dress has got itself a nickname of LBD and has earned an entry in the dictionary. Essentially a cocktail dress very chic and simple, maybe-strappy-maybe-strapless, short and well fitted in the neutral colour black. What is it about the LBD that makes it such a classic? Let’s take an insight into its history. So during the 1920s, the colour black was generally worn for mourning and considered inauspicious. But all hail Coco Chanel who transcended the whole idea into something that was rather enigmatical. Chanel believed that black was the colour of nobility and grace, so she brought it into everyday wear. Later in 1926 Chanel published a short black dress in Vogue and the magazine named this dress as ‘Chanel’s ford’ because as the Model T this dress was available for women of all social classes. It also quoted that Chanel’s dress was “a uniform for all woman of taste”.

From Audrey Hepburn’s Hubert de Givenchy’s LBD in Breakfast at Tiffany’s to Elizabeth Hurley’s drop dead gorgeous Versace dress to Princess Diana’s ‘break up dress’ this dress has never stopped turning heads. The best thing about it is that you can wear it for so many different outings. Suppose your friend comes up with this idea of a fun get together. Since you haven’t really dressed up in a long time, also gained some extra pounds over the vacation, you lack confidence. So what do you do? Still with some hope you casually open your closet and there in a corner shines your ‘never-to-go-wrong’ with LBD. Without another doubt you just slip it on because apart from stunning, the colour black will also make you look slim. It won’t just flatter you but also flatten you. And at that very moment it becomes your very best friend.

A little black dress is way more versatile than already credited for. It can be a worn formally teamed with a blazer for office, along with pearl earrings and nude lipstick demanding respect and looking sensational, all at the same time, making you feel all the more sovereign. Now this office outfit can also be transformed into a cover up for your bathing suit with colourful flip flops and neutral makeup. At last for the after party, this short and simple dress is surely your evening staple. All you need to do is dab your red lipstick on, accessorise, and put your stiletto foot forward. There you go, feeling fashionably safe and good.  As it’s available in all sorts of cuts and silhouettes, a pear shaped body could opt for a halter dress creating an illusion of a more balanced and triangular shape. Whereas someone with a petite body for a rather taller look should go for a sheath dress. A v-neck black dress would be perfect for a curvy physique and for an Apple shaped body, a shirred dress is what one would need.

LBD is one you’ll always want to wear when in a hurry or can’t think of anything else and if you don’t have one yet, what fashion climax are you waiting for?  It’s time that you have your own. And so for your very next spree, happy shopping!
