The Eight of Clubs

On the back side of this piece I decided to add some texture, everything was looking too bland, the paint I used for this was actually halloween face paint, all I had, so there’s some smudging as this paint was not meant for painting on surfaces. When I think of art deco, I think the roaring 20’s, lipstick stained napkins, booze soaked casinos filled with thick cigar smoke. This is a card from a deck playing cards, maybe proprietary to a hotel or stand alone casino. There’s a minimalistic martini glass, some simple designs in the style of art deco. There is also a diamond “logo”, because I’m all about branding. I imagine this diamond to be the logo of the hotel or casino this card belongs to.

The face of this card has a matching border to the back side, very simple but I feel it’s effective. All 4 corners are labeled with clubs as this is the 8 of clubs. I decided to go with something a little different than 8 objects or symbols and went with an maxed out font size “8” from a font called Copasetic NF, this was set to the highest font size, then I zoomed in the page itself to 175% and traced. The apostrophe and “o” are meant to read phonetically like “the eight o’ clubs” said in maybe a new jersey or new york accent. There is an oversized club behind the world “clubs” with which I used the same paint as the back side, I realize now that readability is probably an issue, originally it was much more of a light grey than black but I had made a mistake and rolled with it for continuity purposes. Also, there are smudges as I didn’t anticipate the paint I used to stay wet for so long.
