Before Color
William Eggleston
These images were taken sometime in the mid 60's to early 70's in suburban Memphis. Reproductions were made from the original vintage prints that were printed by William Eggleston himself in his own dark room to create this book.
William was known for working primarily in color, which was not normal for a street photographer. His first exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art was known as 'the most hated of the year'. Today, he is known and celebrated as the father of color photography.
What I like about Eggleston is he reminds me of how I started taking photos. Which was to capture a person off guard without having that person to pose. This was a way to see their real facial expressions. Whether they were walking down the street, eating or doing a daily routine. Also I like the way his images make you see everything in a different light.
