For this project I chose to do a printmaking of a jellyfish. The reason I chose this was because when i was in Florida this summer, jellyfish were actually one of the creatures I saw. I have always adored jellyfish due to their graceful movements.
For the process I first sketched the jellyfish using a reference photo. Then I transferred the sketch to a printing block. on the block i wrote what tentacles I wanted what colors. Then it was time to carve. I first carved the tentacles i wanted yellow and printed about 15 copies. Then I carved the lighter teal-blue color and printed over the yellow. Then repeated the process with darker blue. Before the layer of black i carved the outline of the top of the jellyfish.
For Elements of Art I used Line (The tentacles of the jellyfish), Value (The teal-blue and darker blue colors), and Texture (The ink for the prints left a patchy texture behind). For Principles of Design I used Movement (The movement of the tentacles), Balance (The jellyfish was centered), and Scale (The tentacles are to scale with the head of the jellyfish).
For the problems of the project, none of the finished projects showed the yellow that I started with. Even on this copy, you'll notice that near the start of some tentacles, the black covered even the blues. Also the black ink left a sponge looking texture that shows the blue underneath, and this was the best copy.
However for successes the black looks suprisingly good with the blues.
