Step One // Ideation
Sketch a variety of quick, exploratory sketches to develop ideas and formulate a concept direction.
Step Two // Underlay
Place the selected concept on a fresh page to be used as an underlay.
Step Three // Part Fill
With the sketch as a guide, trace and fill each part. Keep each component on a separate layer for easy manipulation later.
Step Four // Base Color
Select each of the components and adjust their base color.
Step Five // Shading
Add shading to each color block to develop the concept’s forms. A ground plane should be drawn to orient the sketch in space.
Step Six // Materials & Textures
Add texture, highlights, reflections, and details to further define each material.
Step Seven // Finishing Touches
To communicate the product’s scale, sketch in a hand and incorporate other elements such as a brand badge. Linework may be added for interest.
Step Eight // Callouts
Add callouts to highlight concept features, and to supplement the sketch’s composition.
